San Tan Charter School to Celebrate Peace Day on Monday, September 21

The Celebration, Which Will Take Place on the Same Day as the International Day of Peace, Will Feature the Creation of Peace Paths and Decorating a Peace Pole

GILBERT, Arizona—On Monday, September 21, students, teachers and staff at San Tan Charter School will celebrate Peace Day. The celebration will be held on the same day as the International Day of Peace.

San Tan Charter School held its first Peace Day last year with the dedication of a Peace Pole. The event was so popular and meaningful for everyone involved, teachers and staff members decided to make it an annual celebration.

“We will educate students on the diversity of thought and the inclusion of multiple viewpoints, in light of disagreement,” Tauscher said, adding that on Monday, both campuses will unveil Peace Paths that can be used by students to help with productive conflict resolution.

“At the end of the Peace Path, the individuals can come to resolution or an understanding, even if they continue not to share the point of view.”

The Peace Path was proposed by Brooke Taylor, a counselor at San Tan Charter School, and is inspired by Peace Path projects across the country. Tomorrow and Saturday, the school’s Counselor, Dean of Students and Principals will create the Peace Paths in chalk at each campus, and give teachers directions on how to take their students through the Peace Path process next week.

“Creating and having a safe space for protected communication is what really drew me to the project,” Taylor said. “Talking about your emotions is hard already, so helping students through this process is a skill that many of us need, even adults.”

In addition to the Peace Paths, on-campus and online activities will also feature the creation of Peace Flags, decorating the Peace Pole, writing out wishes for peace on pieces of fabric, which will then be tied to a fence, and writing acrostic Peace Poems. The school is also selling special Peace Day t-shirts which were designed by Taylor.

As Tauscher noted, the timing for next week’s celebration and emphasis on peace could not be better.

“San Tan has been working in the background on systematic approaches to lead our community through very turbulent and oppositional times, and one of our responses is our recognition of the International Day of Peace.”

Peace Day also beautifully complements the school’s focus on the iLead values of integrity, love, empathy, accountability and dedication, noted Mary Rose Eagan, Dean of Students at the Recker campus.

“One of the main philosophies at our school is to honor each person’s dignity, whether we’re learning, playing, or helping each other solve a problem,” Eagan said.

“We all make mistakes; we all have bad days, and I think now more than ever, our kids need to understand that we don’t always get it right, but we all deserve the chance to make it better.”
